Lana Del Rey and Quavo's new single "Tough" blends country and trap elements, celebrating resilience and strength.
Lana Del Rey and Quavo are the latest artists to officially enter their country era. With the release of their joint single, “Tough,” the two join the growing list of musicians pivoting to country in 2024, alongside names like Post Malone, Beyoncé, and Machine Gun Kelly. Watch the music video below.
The pair first debuted the track live onstage during Lana Del Rey’s June 20th concert in Boston. The vibey song marries Del Rey’s dreamy vocal delivery with grounded lyrics more expected of the genre: “Tough like the scuff on a pair of worn leather boots/ Like a blue collar, red dirt attitude/ Like a .38 made out of brass/ Tough like the stuff on your grandpa’s glass,” they sing together on the chorus.
“Tough” may possibly be our first preview of Del Rey’s upcoming country album, titled "Lasso," which is expected to arrive in September. When announcing the news earlier this year, Del Rey acknowledged the recent trend of artists across genres capitalizing on the popularity of country. “The music business is going country,” she said. “It’s happening. That’s why Jack [Antonoff] has followed me to Muscle Shoals, Nashville, and Mississippi over the last four years”.
The video itself stars both musicians snuggling up and exploring the countryside. The pair sit together in a field of tall grass, where they nearly share a kiss, and also appear in front of a cottage with an acoustic guitar. In other scenes, Quavo can be seen driving, while Del Rey joins him in the passenger seat as other images of the country flash on screen.
