At the GQ Australia's 2023 Men of the Year Awards, Troye Sivan, celebrated for his hit "Something to Give Each Other," was honored as Man of the Year, a recognition he accepted with an intimate reflection on his relationship with masculinity and femininity.
On the evening of December 6, the illustrious GQ Australia's 2023 Men of the Year Awards unfolded at Sydney's Bondi Pavilion. Amidst a constellation of celebrities, Troye Sivan, the acclaimed musician known for "Something to Give Each Other," garnered the evening's most coveted accolade: Man of the Year.
The 28-year-old pop sensation, donning a pristine all-white ensemble from Prada, radiated joy as he received the award from American actor Ross Lynch. The Bondi Pavilion, a venue synonymous with exclusivity, served as the perfect backdrop for this momentous occasion.
In his heartfelt acceptance speech, Sivan expressed his gratitude to GQ Australia and delivered a moving acceptance speech: “The irony of being named ‘Man of the Year’ isn’t lost on me, especially since this was the year I first experimented with drag. This experience has brought me closer to my femininity than ever before. It underscores a significant point about my lifelong, complex relationship with masculinity. I've often found myself in a liminal space – not fitting into traditional girls' gatherings nor fully aligning with boys' groups.”
Sivan continued, “The journey of unlearning and dismantling these predefined notions has been long and challenging, but I've been fortunate to have remarkable women in my life. Their strength and resilience inspire me immensely. Equally, the men in my life have been a source of incredible support. Most importantly, the queer individuals I've encountered have been pivotal in my journey towards self-love, mutual respect, and community solidarity.”
The 2023 GQ Australia Men of the Year Awards also celebrated a diverse array of talents. Honorees included: nonbinary actor Zoe Terakes as Actor of the Year, Dion Lee for Creative Force of the Year, Eddie Benjamin as Breakthrough Musician of the Year, and James Parr for Model of the Year.
Other notable awardees were Dom Dolla, Solo Artist of the Year; Noah Beck, International Sensation; Sam Rechner, Breakthrough Actor of the Year; Otis Hope Carey, Artist of the Year; Robert Irwin, Social Force; Nathan Cleary, Sportsman of the Year; Reece Walsh, Breakthrough Sportsman of the Year; and Adam Briggs, honored as the Australian Icon.
This prestigious event not only celebrated individual achievements but also highlighted the evolving definitions of masculinity and the importance of embracing one's true self.
