Blink-182 is an American rock band formed in Poway, California, in 1992. The band’s best-known lineup consists of bassist/vocalist Mark Hoppus, guitarist/vocalist Tom DeLonge, and drummer Travis Barker. After years of independent recording and touring, including stints on the Warped Tour, the group signed to MCA Records. Their biggest albums, Enema of the State (1999) and Take Off Your Pants and Jacket (2001), saw considerable international success. Songs like “All the Small Things”, “Dammit” and “What’s My Age Again?” became hit singles and MTV staples.
Their third album, Dude Ranch (1997), was their first to chart on the Billboard 200, peaking at number 67. Dude Ranch also featured their first radio hit, “Dammit”, which helped the album reach Platinum status in the United States. The following album, Enema of the State (1999), was met with more commercial success, reaching top ten positions in several countries, including the United States. Its singles, “What’s My Age Again?”, “All the Small Things”, and “Adam’s Song”, became airplay and MTV staples.
Their fourth album, Take Off Your Pants and Jacket (2001), reached the number-one spot in the United States. In its first week, the album sold more than 350,000 copies in the United States, eventually being certified double Platinum by the RIAA. The first two singles, (“The Rock Show” and “First Date”) achieved moderate success internationally.
In 2003, they released their self-titled album which marked a stylistic shift for the band. In 2011, they released Neighborhoods followed by California in 2016. Their ninth album, One More Time…, was released on October 20, 2023.
Blink-182’s straightforward approach and simple arrangements helped initiate pop-punk’s second mainstream rise, making them popular among generations of listeners. Worldwide, the group has sold 50 million albums and moved 15.3 million copies in the U.S.
In terms of personal life, Mark Hoppus has been married to his wife Skye Everly since December 2000. They have a son named Jack. Travis Barker has been married three times. He had a short-lived marriage with Melissa Kennedy from 2001 to 2002 before tying the knot with Shanna Moakler on Oct. 30, 2004.
On social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram, Blink-182 has had a significant impact. An early adaptor of Twitter, Hoppus took to the platform in January 2009. He’s effectively used social media ever since. The bassist’s heartwarming Twitch sessions with his son reflect his loving fatherly nature. And his calm demeanor during cancer updates reminds us to remain steady even in the face of a serious diagnosis.
