Boygenius, an American indie supergroup, was formed in 2018, marking a significant moment in the indie music landscape. The group consists of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus, each an accomplished singer-songwriter in their own right. Their formation was a serendipitous convergence of talent, born out of mutual admiration and a shared desire to create music that transcends traditional industry norms.
Julien Baker, born on September 29, 1995, in Memphis, Tennessee, is known for her introspective songwriting and haunting vocal style. She gained prominence with her debut album "Sprained Ankle" in 2015. Phoebe Bridgers, born on August 17, 1994, in Los Angeles, California, is characterized by her lyrical depth and ethereal sound. Her debut album "Stranger in the Alps" (2017) received critical acclaim. Lucy Dacus, born on May 2, 1995, in Richmond, Virginia, is celebrated for her narrative songwriting and rich vocals. Her debut album "No Burden" (2016) showcased her talent for introspective and relatable songs.
Boygenius' debut, the self-titled EP 'Boygenius' (2018), was a product of a rapid, four-day recording session. The EP, featuring songs like "Me & My Dog" and "Bite The Hand," was met with universal acclaim, highlighting the group's ability to blend their distinct styles into a cohesive and resonant whole. Their subsequent tour and performances, including on Late Night with Seth Meyers and NPR's Tiny Desk, solidified their presence in the indie music scene.
During 2019–2022, the members of Boygenius continued to collaborate while also focusing on their solo careers. They featured on Hayley Williams' "Roses/Lotus/Violet/Iris" and provided backing vocals for each other's solo projects. In 2020, they released demos from their Boygenius sessions on Bandcamp, raising over $23,000 for charitable organizations.
2023 marked a significant year for Boygenius with the release of their debut studio album, 'The Record', on March 31. The album, featuring singles like "$20," "Emily I'm Sorry," and "True Blue," was a critical and commercial success, topping charts in the UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands, and peaking at number four on the U.S. Billboard 200. The music videos for the singles, directed by Kristen Stewart, were combined into a promotional short film, 'The Film'.
The group's activities in 2023 included headlining the inaugural Re:SET Concert Series and performing at the Coachella Music Festival. They embarked on an international tour, 'The Tour', and released a second EP, 'The Rest', featuring four new songs. Their appearance on Saturday Night Live and a charity cover of "The Parting Glass" in tribute to Sinéad O'Connor further showcased their versatility and commitment to social causes. The group received seven nominations at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year.
