The Chainsmokers, composed of Drew Taggart and Alex Pall, have been a force in the music industry since their formation in 2012. Drew Taggart, born on December 31, 1989, in Freeport, Maine, was exposed to electronic dance music at the age of 15 during a trip to Argentina. He later attended Syracuse University and interned at Interscope Records. Alex Pall, born on May 16, 1985, in Westchester County, New York, pursued an art major at New York University. His father was an art dealer, and his mother was a housewife.
The duo's first single, "Erase," featured Indian actress Priyanka Chopra and was released in 2012. Initially available on Beatport, it later made its way to iTunes. However, it was their 2014 single "#Selfie" that first brought them widespread attention, peaking at #16 on the Billboard Hot 100. Despite the song's commercial success, it faced criticism for its perceived shallow content.
In 2015, The Chainsmokers released their first EP, "Bouquet," which included the hit single "Roses" featuring Rozes. The song reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking their entry into mainstream music. The following year, they released their second EP, "Collage," which included three top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100: "Don't Let Me Down" featuring Daya, which reached #3; "Closer" featuring Halsey, which spent twelve weeks at #1; and "Something Just Like This" in collaboration with Coldplay, which peaked at #3. These successes led to a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 2017.
The Chainsmokers continued to evolve their sound and collaborate with various artists. In 2017, they released "Paris," which peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2018, they collaborated with Kelsea Ballerini on "This Feeling," which reached #50 on the charts. The following year, they worked with 5 Seconds of Summer on "Who Do You Love," peaking at #52, and with Bebe Rexha on "Call You Mine," which reached #56.
In 2022, they released a single titled "High," which peaked at #57 on the Billboard Hot 100. As of 2023, they are actively touring with seven upcoming concerts scheduled in cities such as Orlando, Las Vegas, and Aspen.
Throughout their career, The Chainsmokers have cited influences like Pharrell Williams and DJ Deadmau5. Their music blends elements of pop, hip-hop, and electronic dance music, characterized by sharp beats and catchy melodies. They have also expressed admiration for alternative pop duo Twenty One Pilots.
Sabrina Carpenter's latest single, "Please Please Please," has taken the Spotify world by storm, securing the number 2 spot on the artist and song radios of Spotify's top 50 artists.
