Imagine Dragons, an American pop rock band, was formed in 2008 in Provo, Utah, before relocating to Las Vegas, Nevada. The founding members include lead vocalist Dan Reynolds and drummer Andrew Tolman, who met while attending Brigham Young University. The initial lineup also included Andrew Beck on guitar, Dave Lemke on bass, and Aurora Florence on keys, but this formation saw several changes early on. In 2009, Wayne Sermon (guitar) and Ben McKee (bass) joined the band, completing the lineup alongside drummer Daniel Platzman, who joined in 2011.
The band’s name is an anagram of a phrase known only to members of the group. They gained local fame with their self-titled EP released in 2009, followed by "Hell and Silence" in 2010 and "It's Time" in 2011. Their big break came when they were asked to fill in for Train at the Bite of Las Vegas Festival, performing to an audience of 26,000.
In 2012, Imagine Dragons released their debut album, Night Visions, which included the hit single "It's Time". The album's success was propelled by the single "Radioactive", which became a worldwide hit and earned the band a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance. Night Visions reached number two on the Billboard 200 and has since been certified platinum in multiple countries.
The band's second album, Smoke + Mirrors (2015), debuted at number one in the US, UK, and Canada. It was followed by Evolve (2017), featuring chart-topping singles such as "Believer", "Thunder", and "Whatever It Takes". Their fourth album, Origins (2018), continued their commercial success despite mixed critical reception.
Mercury – Acts 1 & 2, a double album released in two parts in 2021 and 2022, saw the band exploring deeper and more personal themes. Despite mixed reviews, the albums were commercially successful.
In 2023, Imagine Dragons released a live album, Imagine Dragons: Live in Vegas. In 2024, they announced their sixth studio album, Loom, set for release on June 28, 2024. The album has been promoted with singles like "Eyes Closed" and "Nice to Meet You", and it features a collaboration with Colombian singer J Balvin on a new version of "Eyes Closed". The release of Loom is accompanied by a world tour starting in the summer of 2024.
Imagine Dragons have received numerous accolades throughout their career, including three American Music Awards, nine Billboard Music Awards, one Grammy Award, one MTV Video Music Award, and one World Music Award. They are one of the best-selling music artists worldwide, with over 74 million albums and 65 million digital songs sold.
