Jason Derulo, born Jason Joel Desrouleaux on September 21, 1989, in Miramar, Florida, is an American singer-songwriter and dancer. His early life was steeped in the arts, influenced by his Haitian heritage and the vibrant cultural landscape of Florida. By the age of eight, Derulo had already penned his first song, and as a teenager, he gained recognition for his songwriting skills.
Before embarking on a solo career, Derulo had been producing records and writing songs for other artists. His professional trajectory took a significant turn when he signed with the minor recording label Beluga Heights, which later became part of the Warner Music Group. His debut single "Whatcha Say" was released in May 2009 and became an instant hit, selling over five million digital downloads, receiving an RIAA certification of triple platinum, and reaching number one in the U.S. and New Zealand.
On March 2, 2010, he released his self-titled debut album, "Jason Derulo." The album was followed by "Future History" on September 16, 2011, led by the UK number-one single "Don't Wanna Go Home." His third international album, "Tattoos," was released on September 24, 2013, and featured singles like "Marry Me," "Trumpets," "Talk Dirty," and "The Other Side." The album was reissued a year later under the name "Talk Dirty," with additional songs and the single "Wiggle."
Derulo's fourth studio album, "Everything is 4," was released on June 2, 2015, and featured the lead single "Want to Want Me," which topped charts worldwide and reached #6 in the U.S. A compilation album, "Platinum Hits," featuring his 11 platinum songs plus the single "Kiss the Sky," was released a year later.
From 2017 to 2019, Derulo focused on releasing singles and collaborations, most notably "Swalla," "Colors," and "Goodbye." In 2019, he released "2 Sides (Side 1)," the first of two sets of EPs. The second side was set to release in 2020 but was delayed due to disputes with Warner Brothers, leading to his departure from the label.
In 2020, Derulo's single "Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)," a collaboration with Jawsh 685, went viral on TikTok and eventually reached number one in the UK. The song was later remixed by BTS, helping it reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. In 2021, he featured on the remix of "Jalebi Baby" by Indian-Canadian singer Tesher and released his new single "Acapulco."
In March 2023, Derulo was announced as a judge for the Australian version of the singing competition, "The Voice," replacing Keith Urban. Later that month, he starred as Isley Brothers frontman Ron Isley in the biographical film "Spinning Gold." In May 2023, he released the single "When Love Sucks," featuring singer Dido.
On the personal front, Derulo was in a relationship with singer Jordin Sparks for three years, ending in September 2014. The two collaborated on the song "Vertigo" from his "Tattoos" album. Derulo became a father on May 8, 2021, with his then-girlfriend Jena Frumes, although their relationship ended four and a half months after the birth of their son.
