Sean John Combs, born on November 4, 1969, in Harlem, New York, is a multifaceted individual with a career spanning over three decades. Known by various stage names like Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, and Diddy, Combs has made a significant impact in the music industry, business, and beyond.
Raised in Mount Vernon, New York, by his mother Janice Combs, a model and teacher's assistant, Sean lost his father, Melvin Earl Combs, at a young age. Melvin was an associate of convicted New York drug dealer Frank Lucas and was shot to death when Sean was just two years old. Sean graduated from Mount Saint Michael Academy in 1987, where he played football. He later attended Howard University but left after his sophomore year. He returned in 2014 to receive an Honorary Doctorate in Humanities.
Combs began his career as an intern at Uptown Records in 1990. He quickly rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a talent director. He was instrumental in the development of artists like Jodeci and Mary J. Blige. However, he was fired from Uptown Records in 1993, which led him to establish his own label, Bad Boy Entertainment, in a joint venture with Arista Records. The label quickly gained prominence with artists like the Notorious B.I.G., Carl Thomas, Faith Evans, and more.
His debut album, "No Way Out," released in 1997, was a commercial success and won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. Combs has also ventured into acting, appearing in films like "Monster's Ball" and "Made." He has been involved in various business ventures, including his clothing line Sean John, and has been a brand ambassador for Cîroc vodka since 2007. He also co-founded the television network and news website Revolt in 2013.
Legal troubles have also been a part of Combs' life. He was charged with assaulting Steve Stoute of Interscope Records in 1999 and was involved in a shooting incident at Club New York in Times Square later that year. However, he was found not guilty on all charges related to the shooting.
In recent years, Combs has continued to be active in the music industry, forming a rap supergroup in 2010 known as the Dream Team. He also created a female duo, Diddy – Dirty Money, in 2009. Their album, "Last Train to Paris," was released in 2010. In 2014, he announced a mixtape album, "MMM (Money Making Mitch)," and in 2015, it was revealed that he was working on what would be his last album, "No Way Out 2."
As of 2022, Forbes estimated his net worth to be around $1 billion, making him one of the richest figures in the entertainment industry.
Combs has changed his stage name multiple times, most recently going by the name Love, aka Brother Love. His latest album, "The Love Album: Off the Grid," was released in September 2023.
