Joe Mygan has been a staple of the New England experimental music scene for decades, perfecting his use of sampling with set length improvisations on the Elektron Octatrack. On his first LP release ‘Add Water’, he presents two side length pieces that perfectly illustrate his mastery of the form.
Abstract, immersive, and unrelenting, Mygan’s music engulfs the listener from the start and holds on. Resampling repeatedly over years until the source itself is lost in the process, the sounds feel organic and fluid, creating a space for introspection in a snowballing collage of collages that continues to evolve in reevaluation with each recording completed as a live performance.
The music reflects his video art as well with textures and color driven in motion by a unified rhythm; created in TouchDesigner but born from the long running A/V collaborations with Pat Chaney as LSDV.
‘Add Water’ expertly leverages repetition to resolve tensions between stasis and steady forward motion, slowly building and deconstructing the layers of a virtual landscape while dissecting the perception of time to stimulate out of body experience.
