At the port bar where sailors gather to share their sea stories, one man always figures prominently in their tales. They call him the "lost sailor." "Oh, he might be the dumbest man on earth to sail a boat alone on the ocean like that," one sailor said.
"Right! No one in their right mind would do that. Is he trying to get himself killed?" another added. "I'm not going to recruit him as my sailor if he's looking for a job or something," one captain laughed. "No one knows his real name," an old, retired sailor said. "But he's been here once." The bar fell silent, the only sound the pouring of rum.
"What does he look like?" a young sailor asked.
"He looks like you," the old man replied. "Everyone has their own reason to go out there. Some look for money, some for experience, and some try to escape life." The old man coughed before continuing. "When I was a young sailor, I always saw one man in this bar, sitting at the corner table with only one bottle. I knew him. He lived in the valley, happy with his family, working a 9-to-5 job. Every morning, I'd see him walk to work at the local business near this bar."
Everyone listened intently. "He had everything we try to build here. Why was he out there? What happened?" one of the sailors asked. "Dreams, son. He was chasing his dreams," the old man replied. "There are two main types of men: survivors and fighters. Survivors avoid problems, waiting for them to come their way. Fighters do the opposite. Everyone is born with a big hole in their heart and soul. We have to fill this hole with the life we live, or we will never complete it." He paused, then added, "To me, he's not lost at sea. He went there alone to face his fears and complete his life. He's a 'lone sailor.'"
